MTV Video Music Awards 2009

  • Janet Jackson’s performance was excellent. I felt like I was in the era of good music once again. Michael Jackson would be extremely proud of his sister. Good job Ms. Jackson!!
  • Katie Perry’s outfit was on point during her opening performance.
  • Russel Brand’s entrance? A little over the top, yet anti-climatic. Plus, I can only take 2 straight minutes of his talking. He was a hilarious host though.
  • I love Beyonce, but did anyone notice how messed up her lace-front wig looked as she sat, beaming next to Jay in the audience?

  • What was Lady Gaga wearing in the audience? I was kinda feeling some aspects of the fit, but she looked a little uncomfortable from the neck up…agreed? I loved her on stage outfit and the accompanying choreography. On point!
  • Kanye West actually interrupted Taylor Swift during her VMA acceptance speech; he interjected, “I’m sorry, I’ll let you finish, but Beyonce’s video was one of the best in a while.” He received little applause and mostly boos. Not too classy, but definitely needed. Beyonce’s video WAS one of the best in a long time. The decision to pick Taylor Swift’s video over Beyonce’s causes me to wonder about the structure of the VMA’s and even more so, MTV.
  • Jennifer Lopez has been out the spotlight for a minute, but she looked great with her husband Marc Anthony!
  • Green Day’s performance was excellent and energetic. Enough said!
  • I definitely was digging Kid Cudi’s tribute to DJ AM. Cudi is genius and I can’t wait for his cd to drop.
  • It was a great idea to have Wale performing in between acts and awards for an easier transition. He gave the Gogo genre some great exposure.
  • I thoroughly enjoyed Pink’s display of acrobatics. Definitely up there with Lady Gaga’s performance innovation.
  • Lil Mama, BUMP THE HATERS. Even though the outfit was a little out there, you are still a fierce young lady; very sexy. Keep it NY ma!
  • Amber Rose’s snakeskin get up? A mess. You’re beautiful Amber, but what the crap was going on with your stomach in this fit? Stomach crunches much?

Karen De Freitas launched her label Soka at age 20. This young and talented Vincentian designer utilizes visual tantalization in her practical designs. Her use of natural textures and materials creates looks of elegance and grace. Her work has seen the stages of Miami Fashion Week, Island World Fashion Week, and soon will see New York for the Nolcha Fashion Week. I have had the pleasure of talking with Karen via Facebook and invited her to showcase her work at my university, Vanderbilt University, located in Nashville, TN. She readily accepted the invitation. The fashion show will be hosted by the Caribbean Students Association on October 29th; more details will follow soon. In the meanwhile, entice your visual senses by looking at some of Karen’s work below. There are links to various websites, which covered her designs.
